Ruby Nuby teaches Ruby on Rails programming, related technologies and entrepreneurial skills to at-risk youths who are sponsored by the adults we teach. They learn alongside each other creating socio-economic bridges and incubate businesses together through our startup competitions. We teach 9th graders and place them in paid internships with companies that we partner with. After working full-time during the summers and part-time throughout high school, our graduates can earn $80-100k in NYC as intermediate Rails developers with out any college education, degree or debt. The companies that hire our youth pledge full scholarships so these new developers can work for them during the day and go to college at night. Once our graduates enter the work force, they are expected to pay back financially to Ruby Nuby so we can become self-funding. The current educational model is a pay-forward model with students graduating, if they graduate, with an average of $24,000 in debt without job placement. We are creating a pay-back model to success with job placement where dropping out of the program or changing majors does not incur any debt.

Behind every small or large corporate internet success story, whether in social media, communications, or finance, are computer programmers who know how to make it happen. While programmers have a choice of options to use, the fastest growing programming language today is Ruby on Rails© (RoR) valued for its open source agility, flexibility, and ease of use.
Our Ruby community is drawing upon that knowledge to bring together young people – Nubies – who want to learn with professionals who want to mentor. The result of that combination will be to change the conventional educational route to professional training and expanded economic
opportunity to high paying jobs.
